Taking Advantage of Timely Keywords - page 2

Even though the adult filter was on, prurience has crept in anyway. 89.com is a site that lists many sources of porn (again, we see that the people looking for 89.com aren't clever enough to just type that into the address window of the browser), and one could interpret thong as a similar interest.

Another conclusion we can draw is the great importance of some of the most important names on the Internet. Yahoo is popular enough that it takes up two spots on the list. If we add together the number of occurrences of either form of yahoo, then we find that searches for yahoo are the most frequent of all search engine queries. Which tells us that if you want to do business on the Web, pay Yahoo their $300 to be listed in their database.

Of course, we also see our old friend Google, who now handles a lot of all the searches on the Web, in addition to eBay; we all know of its great popularity.

How can we use this? These most important terms aren't very useful for what most of us do. But it is possible to look through the top 100 or 200 for terms that might bring relevant business to your site, then edit your site to get good search engine position for that term.

Here is the list for the last 24 hours:

Nos Keyword Count
1 john kerry 4847
2 ashlee simpson 4086
3 lunar eclipse 3962
4 halloween costumes 3795
5 george w. bush 3776
6 halloween 3414
7 google 3055
8 yahoo 2827
9 ebay 2156
10 pumpkin carving 1966
11 rick hendrick 1767
12 mapquest 1684
13 dictionary 1641
14 presidential polls 1631
15 paris hilton 1558
16 yahoo.com 1504
17 hummer h3 1481
18 lindsay lohan 1266
19 jokes 1265
20 hotmail 1188
21 thomas jefferson 1116

Again, we see that yahoo, google and ebay are important. This shorter-term analysis shows many more terms of the moment. For example, just before Halloween, we see terms related to that holiday. There's a lot of interest in the Hummer H3, a new model just introduced that's about the size of a Jeep Liberty. A Hummer for the masses, at last!

John Kerry is outnumbering George Bush by over 1,000 uses in the past 24 hours. Does this show great interest in Kerry, or does it mean that people are comfortable with Bush but don't know about Kerry?

What does this 24-hour picture tell us that can help us market our Web sites? We can't very well use free search on these seasonal terms--it takes too long to get a free search position. However, pay per click delivers traffic as quickly as you set it up and give them a credit card. So if your site can be well promoted by some term with a lot of seasonal relevance, you could consider setting up a landing page and starting a quick pay per click campaign to take advantage of one of these short-lived terms.

As an example, if you sold telescopes, consider the term eclipse. Buy traffic on it from Google and Overture (now Yahoo), direct that traffic to a landing page that talks about how you can watch the eclipse better with a telescope or binoculars or a camera built into binoculars--and offer free overnight shipping so that you can get it in time at no extra cost--and see how many eclipse-watchers become telescope buyers!

The Bottom Line: If the terms work for your site, consider tying in some of the most popular terms into your own Web marketing efforts. ###
